How Employment Law Firms Use AI to Win the Paper Fight

The defense may have the bigger team, but here’s how plaintiff employment firms use AI to set the pace, from the first call to trial or arbitration.

When Josh White launched Laurel Employment Law in March 2024, the firm was two people, and his first technology investment wasn’t a practice management system.

“We launched with Eve,” White says. “From day one, Eve was part of our tech stack.”

Eve for Labor & Employment is legal AI that works across the employment case with your team, from the first inquiry to trial or arbitration prep. It’s how more firms can set the pace the way Laurel does.

Why employment law firms run out of attorney hours first

Plaintiff employment firms feel the pressure all around: from a client’s clock that’s already running, from the agency and from the other side. In fiscal year 2025, the EEOC processed more than 88,000 new discrimination charges with 10% fewer staff than a year earlier, so more cases land on your firm.

Across the table, the employer has a defense firm, and often an insurer, with more lawyers to draft every motion and response. You won’t match their headcount, and on contingency you don’t bill for the hours it would take to try. What you can control is how much of each complaint, discovery response and brief your attorneys still draft by hand.

“By our internal estimate, our attorneys and paralegals are 30 to 40 percent more productive on drafting and analysis,” writes Brian Morgan-Heit, co-founder of Cedar Employment Law. “Clients see the difference. A demand goes out. A complaint gets drafted. A status update arrives. They know their case is moving with urgency.”

Frontier Law Center in Woodland Hills, California, used Eve to grow its caseload 2.5 times without adding headcount. “Eve is like an extra hand for every one of our employees,” says managing partner Manny Starr.

How employment law firms use AI across the case

Employment law firms use AI to screen at intake, draft EEOC charges and complaints, answer and propound discovery, prepare for depositions, and assist with case resolution — whether that’s in arbitration, mediation or trial. Here’s how that works in Eve. See it in a demo now.

Draft the complaint, EEOC charge and arbitration opposition from your case files

Eve drafts documents from your case files, in your firm’s voice, with citations attorneys can check. That includes complaints, EEOC charges, right-to-sue notices, position statement rebuttals, and demand letters for firms that send them.

Before you file, Eve reviews the arbitration agreement for enforceability in any state or federal court. When the defense moves to compel arbitration, Eve drafts the opposition for the arbitration fight.

At Freeburg & Granieri, an employment firm in Pasadena, complaint drafting dropped from 25 to 30 hours to under four. The firm set up Eve to customize how it drafts for each type of case it handles, from discrimination and sexual harassment to wage and hour misclassification. Paralegals put together the first draft, and a partner does the final review. Founding partner Christy Granieri calls it “paint by numbers” for her team.

Draft discovery responses and catch what the employer left out

Discovery is the slog of employment litigation, with multiple rounds of responses and employer productions that come back incomplete. Eve drafts your client’s responses and the discovery you send, checks the employer’s responses and documents against your requests, drafts the meet and confer letter, and assists with a motion to compel when the production falls short.

At Barrett & Farahany, a 17-attorney firm practicing in eight states, discovery responses dropped from 10 to 20 hours to 30 to 45 minutes, saving attorneys more than 20 hours a week. “The reason we implement AI is to let the computers do what they can, allowing our people to focus on what they do best,” says managing partner Amanda Farahany.

Turn the employer’s production into deposition outlines

The employer holds most of the records, and its production can run to thousands of pages of personnel files, investigation files, pay records, handbooks and emails. Eve summarizes the production and builds employment history, pay and working-hours chronologies.

Paul Granieri, director of operations at Freeburg & Granieri, says Eve’s timelines blew his mind. Eve can put the plaintiff’s account and the defense’s on separate timelines and show where they diverge. And a production that once took hours to index now has a working index in 30 seconds.

From there, Eve drafts the deposition outline, with key topics and questions tied to proposed exhibits, and flags missing evidence to request before the deposition. Your attorney walks into the deposition with confidence.

When the case heads to mediation, Eve drafts the mediation brief or settlement conference statement from the same case files, so the numbers and facts you lean on are cited.

Research and apply employment law without leaving Eve

An employment case can turn on local, state, and federal law, and those rules can change. Eve researches case law, statutes and regulations from inside the case, so you can rely on and verify current law without having to switch tools.

Eve cites its findings to your case files, so an attorney can check each one before a filing goes out. Contrast that with a general-purpose AI tool that can write fluent text, but hasn’t read your case file.

Paul Granieri evaluated 10 or 11 legal AI platforms before Freeburg & Granieri chose Eve. “What stood out to me overwhelmingly was the accuracy,” he says. “Eve took the actual data that we had and used that information accurately.”

Screen employment intake around the clock

Eve scores new inquiries against your firm’s own criteria, day or night, so your firm signs the right cases and attorneys spend their time on viable claims.

At Frontier Law Center, intake used to mean a staff member on the phone for up to an hour, then an attorney combing pages of notes. “It was like finding a needle in a haystack,” says Manny Starr. Now the firm transcribes each intake call and runs it through Eve, which flags the potential claims and their strengths and weaknesses. Starr estimates the calls take about half as long, and lead conversion climbed from 10% to 35%.

Once a client signs, Eve keeps them updated on the case and connects to the CMS, email and calendar your firm already runs.

How Laurel Employment Law serves discovery 10 days after the complaint

Laurel splits litigation into stages, each owned by a team that builds the work product in Eve for attorneys to approve.

That lets the firm set the pace of every case. Ten days after serving a complaint, Laurel serves full discovery on every defendant. When the responses come back deficient, a 12-page meet and confer letter reaches opposing counsel the next morning.

“Eve doesn’t get tired,” White says. “Eve doesn’t get fatigued. Eve doesn’t get distracted by the World Series. Eve is just there, cranking out work quickly.”

Demand letters that took two to four hours now take 3 to 5 minutes of review after Eve agents draft them. In 24 months, Laurel has grown to more than 1,500 active clients and more than 100 employees on five continents.

When opposing counsel calls to ask how he does it, White keeps his answer short: “Get used to it.” Read the full story.

Considering Eve for your employment firm?

Manny Starr spent six years growing Frontier Law Center the hard way before building Eve into every part of the firm. “If you’re not building AI into your practice, you’re gonna have a problem,” he says.
